Technical Support > Why does Sherlock have to run after other Anti-Virus Scanners?
This is to ensure that when disks are being checked, no additional error messages are generated by the On-Access component of the Anti-Virus scanner. For example, if Sherlock was run first on a disk containing a virus within a ZIP file, although the disk would still be failed, the On-Access component of the Anti-Virus product will have generated virus alerts.

This is because Sherlock unzips the contents to a temporary area on the Hard Disk. The On-Access component of the other scanner will detect the presence of a virus in these files, and generate alerts on the screen. By scanning with the On-Demand component of the other scanner first, the other scanner itself will detect the virus, and the disk will be failed immediately.

If the other scanner does not detect the virus, then Sherlock will be able to unzip the files to the Hard Disk and then spot the virus itself.

Also a number of scanners do not allow the Floppy Drive to be excluded, and hence Sherlock will be refused access to the files, which will generate messages on the screen from the On-Access Anti-Virus scanner. By running the other scanner first, the virus will be detected without additional messages on the screen.

Please note, if you are not using the On-Access component of the other Anti-Virus scanner, this situation will not occur, and the scanners can be placed in any order.
