prevent all viruses from infecting any PC

The role of the Protected Environment in security strategies

Through Disk Authorisation, Disknet creates what we call the Protected Environment, an island of safety in dangerous waters. The principle purpose of the protected environment is to create a known state of operation, a safe, clean, controlled computing system totally isolated from the dangers of the unknown state of the world beyond. By limiting the routes onto this safe island to secure "gateways", rather like customs houses, it becomes impossible to smuggle viruses into the network.

In less prosaic terms, the Disknet Protected Environment works like this: to stop any virus entering your system via a floppy disk, Disknet requires that all floppy disks used on Disknet-equipped PCs are first scanned at an administrator's PC ("the customs house") using the AV Scanner(s) of your choice.

For complete software security Disknet Client PCs use the Disknet Disk Authorisation facility to signature floppy disks only if they contain no executable files, no executable code in the boot sector, and no self-executing macros attached to MS Word or Excel documents. (In the latter scenario, each PC in your organisation acts as its own "customs house").

If all the criteria for safety are met, the floppy disk cannot contain a virus, and can be given a company-unique signature which confirms its fitness for use.
