BugBear-B yet another mass mailing e-mail worm causing havoc!
June, 2003
"I just don't get it! Why in this day and age are corporate network managers allowing their users to copy or install executable code onto their hard drives and networks? Given the risk from mass mailing e-mail worms and other malicious code this seems completely foolhardy", writes Andy Campbell MD of Reflex Magnetics Ltd.
"We have been supplying a software solution to this problem since 1992 with Reflex Disknet. Reflex Disknet Pro released earlier this year has the ability to prevent the download of new executable code from the Internet, removable media, network connections in short from anywhere. I can see no reason why you would want your users to be copying or installing executable code without your knowledge and sanction. Taking this kind of control is not an over-the-top response to the problem but a sensible precaution, hey it even combats your problem with unlicensed software use. Today a network manager can put this type of control in place without it restricting the deployment of authorised software, I can't understand why more companies don't take this control."
BugBear-B like many mass-mailing worms delivers an executable attachment (either .exe, .pif, or.scr) Reflex Disknet Pro can be configured to prevent any attempt to introduce a file with these extensions or any other executable extension. Files of these type that are already present on the hard disk are allowed and can operate without restriction from Reflex Disknet Pro.
