Reflex Disknet Pro: Important BIOS Incompatibility warning

The information in article applies to the following product
  • Disknet version /3.10/1.82/2.10
The information in article applies to the following operating systems
  • Windows 9x/NT/2000
symptoms

We have been made aware of an incompatibility between Disknet and certain BIOS revisions. The two BIOS’s concerned are
  • Phoenix 4.06 rev 1.02.1064
  • Award Modular Bios Ver. 4.51PG
  • Compaq Bios

cause

With the Phoenix BIOS (and potentially future versions from this manufacturer) we have discovered that Disknet’s ‘Prevent Booting From Floppy’ option cannot be used.

The BIOS checks that the Hard Disk is fully working, and has a bootable partition, before they attempt to boot off the Hard Disk. Selecting the option "Prevent Booting From Floppy" makes the Hard Disk appear non-bootable. The BIOS then displays an error message and won’t boot.

solution

If you encounter this problem, simply boot from a Disknet Accessit Disk and then you will be able to access the Hard Disk on the next boot, allowing you to disable the option.

In most cases, simply not installing with the ‘Prevent Booting from Floppy’ option has dealt with the problem. However, we have reports from some environments where the whole of Disknet’s Boot Protection has to be turned off.

This appears to weaken the protection offered by Disknet, but, by setting the BIOS to boot from the C: Drive, and then the A: Drive, and password protecting this BIOS set-up, you will still have the same level of protection without the concern of this incompatibility.
