We are often asked why do we not support every Anti-Virus scanner available on the Windows 9x platform so it seemed sensible to explain why certain scanners do not appear in the list.
When Disknet authorises a disk the administrator module must link with and drive a virus scanner/s. Once it is happy that the disk is virus free, it will then add the Disknet signature to the disk. To do this the module must be able to run the virus scanner, telling it to scan the floppy drive (A: or B:) and then look at the results returned by the virus scanner. The results we need to get back from the scanner are that the scan was successful, no errors were found, and also that no viruses were found.

To get the scanner to check the floppy drive means the Anti-Virus scanner must have some method of being controlled by another process, normally using command line parameters. We also need the scanner to be able to surpress all user interaction whilst the scan is being performed to prevent the user from interfering with the scan, although this is not normally a major problem if we are getting the correct results from the scanner.

To be able to support an individual Anti-Virus scanner, the scanner must be able to be controlled via our software (normally via the command line) and must have some form of reporting that we can analyse. If the Anti-Virus program does not provide these facilities we are unable to support it.
The current lists of supported Anti-Virus scanners are:
- Dr SolomonĂs FindVirus
- Data Fellows F-Secure v3.01+
- Symantec Norton Anti-Virus
- Reflex Magnetics Sherlock
- Cybec VET
- McAfee VirusScan v3.02+
- Sophos Sweep
